Goals/mission:
- TZL’s stated goal is to cherish, promote, and protect zines as a medium of communication and a literary subculture.
- TZL promotes the values inherent to zines as an art form — especially publishing autonomy.
- TZL promotes accessibility and fights ableism in the literary community by dissolving financial barriers to participation, collectivizing the reading of digestible texts, and combating COVID minimization. Hence, TZL implicitly aims to advocate for social justice through the zine medium and the space itself.
Notable activities:
- Honestly, the space alone is so rad that they don’t need to do anything else besides run it.
- TZL frequently hosts zine-making workshops and tables at community zine spaces all across so-called Southern “Ontario.”
- TZL hosted a three-part D.I.Y. Zine Workshop Series with Hart House in March and April 2023.
- In Oct 2023, TZL hosted a space in the TRANZAC to organize against corporate housing development.
Ways to get involved:
- Browse the collection at the second floor of the TRANZAC (292 Brunswick Ave; near Spadina Station).
- Don’t be afraid to do some zine distro (with the consent of zine creators, of course).
- Donate zines to the library (again, ideally with consent).
- Collaborate with TZL to host a zine-making workshop with your club or organization.
