Goals/mission:
– Little Brother Magazine is a Toronto-based, print-only literary magazine, founded by Emily M. Keeler, that aims to bring both the media and literary communities together to redefine creative thought. Art direction by Charles Yeo, and inspired by the WET and Emigre magazines.
– Challenges the slush pile culture of literary magazines, and goes by a commission only policy instead.
– Strives to connect emerging writers with established writers through print and lecture series selections.
Notable past and current activities:
– Issues of the publication are printed and released biannually. They feature essays, short stories, poetry, and visual art.
– The publication offers a 10,000 word essay each issue, which can be about anything and everything the writer chooses. (One was about hot dogs!) The selected writer works with the editors for a year to produce this ultra-longform, boundary-breaking essay.
– “What We Talk About: A Lecture Series” is a quarterly lecture series where writers can present on anything they want, as long as it relates to the night’s theme. The events are now recorded and available on SoundCloud.
– In 2013, a one time special project called “Everything is Fine” was organized, and, within two weeks, a zine was produced.
Ways to get involved:
– Buy in print. Little Brother Magazine sells past issues through its online store. Order a subscription, or buy upcoming issues separately.
– Go in person. Attend the “What We Talk About” series! Tickets range from $10-15 at the door, or $7 online.
– Keep in touch. Sign up for their newsletter to know what will happen next, via the website page.
