Goals/mission:
- Annick Press publishes contemporary children’s books with the intent to speak to the diverse audience that is in Toronto, although they also sell nationally and globally.
- They call themselves the “most innovative publishers of fiction and nonfiction for children” because the company was created in the 1970s to diversify the children’s book industry and give Canadian writers more opportunities.
- Their books include Indigenous stories, as well as books about living with disabilities, female empowerment, and the experiences of minoritized people.
Notable activities:
- They are the publisher of the famous female-empowerment story The Paper Bag Princess, which has sold seven million copies worldwide. Other famous titles include Fatty Legs, My Day with Gong Gong, and Salma the Syrian Chef.
- Annick shares educator resources and celebrates Paper Bag Princess Day with schools.
- Annick organizes an annual mentorship program for aspiring authors, who get to learn about the behind-the-scenes process of publishing and receive a grant. The mentorship program was created in an effort to “break down barriers” in the industry and open up the industry to people who often do not get such opportunities.
Ways to get involved:
- Read: Support Annick by reading their work
- Share: Follow Annick on social media, sign up for their newsletter, and give the children in your life Annick books.
